The job of the Development and Sponsor Relations Committee is to ensure sufficient support and financial resources for the Commission and its partners to implement high priority activities and events.
The Chair is Greg Barnhill of Brown Advisory.
Major accomplishments to date
- Generated support for House (Ruppersberger) and Senate (Cardin) bills for the production of commemorative coins that would generate $8.5 million for the Commission. Successfully advocated the increase to $8.5 million, up from the original $3 million proposed. On August 16, 2010, President Obama signed the Star-Spangled Banner Commemorative Coin Act H.R. 2097 into law.
- Star-Spangled 200, Inc (SS200) is the Commission’s companion 501c (3) non-profit partner and will lead the fundraising efforts for bicentennial projects. Ballard Spahr assisted in preparing the organizational documents and securing non-profit status with the Internal Revue Service.
- Testified in support of creation of Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail before U.S. House Committee- became 26th National Historic Trail in May 2008. Appointed by the Secretary of the Interior to serve on National Advisory Council.
- Assisted NPS in securing $500,000 for Trail projects in NPS FY 2010 budget; framed request for $4,550,000 in NPS FY 2011 budget. Meeting monthly with NPS staff to coordinate Trail planning with Scenic Byway planning.
- Met with senior staff in the Office of the Secretary, U.S. Department of the Interior, as follow-up to meeting between Secretary Salazar and Governor O’Malley, to make a multi-year ask in the range of $25 to $50 million.
